Roses (About 9" by 12", pencil)

Most of this was inspired by Robin McKinley's Rose Daughter, a gorgeous book often overlooked because so many people prefer her first take on Beauty and the Beast. I'm one of the exceptions - once I got used to the odd names of her sisters, the rest was just stunning. I don't claim by the way that this is Beauty - this girl has a bit of the wrong mood in her face - only that it's where I started, and why there are so many roses in the design.

The bird in the roundel on the right side is an old image of mine, and really, he belongs in another story.

This image is, alas, fuzzier than the original, but for those with screens that can handle it, here's a scan that's closer to the actual size and fairly clear.
